We spent 6 months in France (mainly) but also in Spain WWOOFING - stands for "Willing workers on organic farms". This basically involved going to different hosts who had signed up to the scheme and working in return for food and accommodation. It's a sort of cultural exchange and half the original reason for doing it was to improve our French but also to get away from it all for a bit and experience some of the great outdoors. It turned out to be a whole lot more than we ever hoped and was a fantastic (although challenging)experience for a family of three; Andy, Helene and Tegan. We chose France in part because it was somewhere we knew quite a bit about and then circumstances lead us to Spain as well.
You can WWOOF all over the world and we met lots of people who had done just that.
